Analyst Gym vs Maven Analytics

Maven Analytics teaches the tools through video courses with human instructors: Excel and Power BI in real depth, plus Tableau, SQL and Python, with live workshops on its Pro plan.

Analyst Gym doesn't teach tools. Its self-paced courses teach the judgment around the code (three courses so far), and a five-minute daily drill gives you regular practice with feedback. If you need a tool or a learning path with projects, Maven is the stronger pick. If you want to get better at everything beyond the code, that's Analyst Gym.

Which one should you pick?

Pick Maven Analytics if

  • You need Excel or Power BI, or prep for a Microsoft certification exam. If you're working toward your first analyst role, start there.[4]
  • You like having an instructor talk you through it, live or on video.[15]
  • You want a learning path with guided projects you can show in a portfolio.[5][6]
  • You need CPE credits.[19]

Pick Analyst Gym if

  • You can already use the tools and want to get better at the calls you make with them.
  • You want courses on the skills beyond the code: reading the real request, choosing a metric you can stand behind, checking AI's work.
  • You're getting ready for case questions like "How would you measure the success of this feature?"
  • You want regular practice with feedback: a call to make each day, then the reasoning behind the strongest answer.

Use both if

You're working through Maven's tool courses and want a daily rep on the judgment side. Maven's critical thinking courses and Analyst Gym's courses cover some of the same ideas, so if you already have Maven Pro, try the free drills before buying Analyst Gym's courses.

Courses on everything beyond the code

Plenty of places teach the tools. Analyst Gym is built for everything beyond the code: the judgment that separates a decent analyst from a great one.

The courses teach the concepts, one idea at a time, on topics that rarely get a whole course anywhere else. The daily drill is where you keep practicing them, with feedback on every call.

We built it to be the best place to grow these skills: the ones that set you apart from other candidates and peers, and help you make more impact, find more valuable insights and grow your career faster.

What Maven Analytics does better

  • Depth on the Microsoft tools: courses from Excel formulas to advanced DAX, and prep for the PL-300 and MO-201 exams.[4]
  • Human instructors, plus live workshops you can join on Pro.[1][15][20]
  • Guided projects, data challenges and a public portfolio for career switchers who need work to show.[1][6][7]
  • CPE credits, through its registration with NASBA.[19]
  • Breadth: 70 courses and 13 learning paths.[4][5]

Where they differ

Two kinds of drills

Computing the right number and deciding what a number means are different skills. A calculation has one answer you can check. A judgment call usually doesn't, and the reasoning is what you take away.

Maven's Data Drills are the first kind. They're free and come out at least monthly: you download a dataset, work it in your own tool and submit one number.[9][10][11]

Analyst Gym's drills are the second kind. One comes out every day, there's nothing to download, and each is a situation where you make the call and then see the reasoning.

Where the courses overlap

Maven has courses on some of the same ideas. Critical Thinking in the Age of AI (3 hours) covers translating vague requests and spotting flawed reasoning, Thinking Like an Analyst (3 hours) includes a measurement planning exercise, and its "AI on Trial" workshop has you cross-examine an AI's flawed analysis. If those are what you're after and you're already on Maven, they're a good place to start.[13][14][16]

What Analyst Gym doesn't do

Analyst Gym doesn't:

  • Teach Excel, Power BI, SQL or any other tool.
  • Offer a big library. There are three courses today.
  • Offer CPE credits.
  • Run live workshops or have instructors you can talk to.
  • Have guided projects, data challenges or a portfolio.
  • Have a long track record. Daily drills started in August 2026.
