Analyst Gym vs Analyst Builder

Analyst Builder, from Alex Freberg (Alex The Analyst on YouTube), teaches the analyst tool stack: SQL, Excel, Python, Tableau and Power BI in long video courses, plus a bank of SQL and Python practice questions with a video solution for each one.

Analyst Gym doesn't teach tools. Its courses teach the judgment around the code, and a five-minute daily drill gives you regular practice with feedback. If you're learning SQL or getting ready for a technical screen, Analyst Builder is the stronger pick. If you want to get better at case questions and the decisions that come after the query runs, that's Analyst Gym.

Which one should you pick?

Pick Analyst Builder if

  • You're learning SQL, Excel or Python. If you're working toward your first analyst role, start there.[6]
  • You have a technical SQL or Python screen coming up and want practice questions with worked solutions.[8]
  • You want help with the job search too: a resume analyzer, portfolio projects and a course on landing a data job.[11][12][13]
  • You'd rather buy one course and keep it than subscribe.[3]

Pick Analyst Gym if

  • You can already write the query and want to get better at what you do with the result.
  • You want courses on the skills beyond the code: reading the real request, choosing a metric you can stand behind, checking AI's work.
  • Your interviews include case questions like "A metric dropped. What do you check first?"
  • You want a new situation to reason through every day, with feedback, in about five minutes.

Use both if

You're building tool skills on Analyst Builder or Alex's YouTube videos and want daily practice on the judgment side. The drill is free, so adding it costs you five minutes a day.

Courses on everything beyond the code

Plenty of places teach the tools. Analyst Gym is built for everything beyond the code: the judgment that separates a decent analyst from a great one.

The courses teach the concepts, one idea at a time, on topics that rarely get a whole course anywhere else. The daily drill is where you keep practicing them, with feedback on every call.

We built it to be the best place to grow these skills: the ones that set you apart from other candidates and peers, and help you make more impact, find more valuable insights and grow your career faster.

What Analyst Builder does better

  • Practice for technical interviews: SQL and Python questions from easy to very hard, each with a video solution.[1][8]
  • Low cost for a lot of tool content: $249 a year, $449 lifetime, or single courses from $14.[1][2][3]
  • A free on-ramp: Alex's YouTube channel, including a free data analyst bootcamp.[14][15]
  • Job search help: a course on landing a data job, resume templates and an AI resume analyzer.[11][13]
  • Portfolio projects you can show an employer.[12]

Where they differ

Short reps and long courses

A long course is the right shape for learning a tool, because each lesson builds on the one before. Judgment works the other way: each case stands on its own, and what improves you is seeing many different cases over time. That's why an Analyst Gym drill takes five minutes and a new one comes every day.

Where they overlap

Analyst Builder has some judgment practice too. Its Soft Skills for Data Professionals course (1 hour 29 minutes) covers communicating with non-technical stakeholders and asking the right questions. And it has about 70 "general" interview questions, many of them open-ended scenarios, including an A/B test someone wants to roll out after one day and two teams reporting different "active users" numbers. If you're already on Analyst Builder, those are worth doing.[9][10]

What Analyst Gym doesn't do

Analyst Gym doesn't:

  • Teach SQL, Python, Excel or any other tool.
  • Prepare you for a technical SQL or Python screen.
  • Offer a big library. There are three courses today.
  • Help with resumes, portfolios or the job search itself.
  • Have a community or a place to talk with other learners.
  • Have a long track record. Daily drills started in August 2026.
